When it comes to saffron, not all varieties are created equal. Our Afghan Saffron is Grade I Negin — the highest classification of saffron available — hand-harvested from the fertile fields of Herat, Afghanistan, a region that produces some of the finest saffron in the world.
What Makes Afghan Saffron Different?
Most saffron sold in Canada comes from Iran or Spain. While these are quality sources, Afghan Negin saffron is widely regarded among chefs and connoisseurs as superior in colour strength (crocin), aroma (safranal), and flavour (picrocrocin) — the three markers used to grade saffron quality internationally.
Grade I Negin saffron consists entirely of the deep red stigma of the crocus flower with no yellow style attached — this means you are getting pure, concentrated saffron with maximum potency and zero filler.
How to Use Afghan Saffron?
A small amount goes a long way. For most recipes, 3 to 5 threads steeped in 2 tablespoons of warm water for 15 minutes will release the full colour and aroma. Use it in rice dishes like biryani and Persian rice, in desserts like kheer and saffron milk, in teas, and in marinades for chicken and lamb.
