Mamra vs California Almonds: What's the Difference?

Mamra vs California Almonds: What's the Difference?

Mamra and California almonds are different varieties: Mamra is a smaller, denser, irregular Afghan almond with a richer, more buttery flavour and a softer bite, while California almonds are larger, flatter, more uniform, milder and crunchier. Mamra costs noticeably more per kilogram, so most people choose California almonds for everyday baking and snacking and Mamra for eating on their own, soaking, gifting and special dishes.

Here's a closer look at how the two compare on looks, taste, price and use, so you can decide which belongs in your pantry.

Two Different Almond Varieties

Mamra almonds

Mamra (often called Mamra badam or the "royal almond") is a traditional variety grown in Afghanistan and Iran. It's prized across South and Central Asia and is usually sold in specialty dry-fruit shops rather than mainstream grocery stores. Our Mamra almonds are sourced directly from Afghanistan and sold raw.

California almonds

California almonds are what most Canadians picture when they think of an almond. California grows the large majority of the world's almonds, across several commercial varieties, with Nonpareil the best known. They're the almonds you'll find in nearly every Canadian grocery store, bakery and snack aisle. Our California almonds are whole and selected for consistent size.

Size and Shape

You can usually tell the two apart at a glance:

  • Mamra — smaller and irregular, often slightly curved or boat-shaped, with a darker, more wrinkled skin. No two look quite the same.
  • California — larger, flatter and teardrop-shaped, with a smooth, even, lighter-brown skin. Very uniform from one nut to the next.

The irregular look of Mamra is part of its character. If a bag labelled "Mamra" is full of large, flat, perfectly uniform almonds, it's worth asking questions.

Texture and Flavour

This is where most people notice the biggest difference.

Mamra: rich and buttery

Mamra almonds have a dense kernel with a naturally oily texture that comes across as richer and more buttery in the mouth. The bite is softer, and once soaked and peeled they become tender and delicate. Many people describe the flavour as naturally sweet and fuller than a regular almond.

California: mild and crunchy

California almonds have a mild, clean flavour and a firm, satisfying crunch. That neutral taste is exactly why they work so well in baking, granola, almond butter and almond milk — they don't overpower other ingredients.

Neither is "better" — they're simply different. Think of it as the difference between an everyday cooking olive oil and a small-batch finishing oil.

Price per Kilogram

Mamra almonds cost considerably more than California almonds, mostly because they're grown in smaller volumes and are much harder to source in Canada. Here's how our own prices compare at the time of writing (prices in Canadian dollars; check the product pages for current pricing):

  • Mamra almonds, 1kg: $59.99 — about $43.00/kg in the 10kg size ($429.99)
  • California almonds, 1kg: $17.99 — about $17.00/kg in the 10kg size ($169.99)

So at the 1kg size, Mamra costs a little over three times as much as California almonds. Both get cheaper per kilogram as the pack size goes up.

Shipping differs too: raw Mamra almonds always ship free anywhere in Canada at every size, while California almonds ship free on orders of $89 or more (up to 10kg).

How Each Is Eaten

Mamra: soaked, on their own, and for special occasions

Because they're costlier and more flavourful, Mamra almonds are usually enjoyed where you'll really taste them: a small handful on their own, with tea, alongside dates or raisins, or in festive sweets. They're a classic gift during Eid and other family occasions in Afghan and South Asian homes.

California: everyday cooking and baking

California almonds are the workhorse: snacking by the handful, chopping into salads and oatmeal, baking into cookies and cakes, toasting for granola, or blending into almond butter and almond milk. When a recipe needs a lot of almonds, California is the practical choice.

Mamra Almonds in Tradition

In Afghan, Persian, Pakistani and Indian households, Mamra almonds are traditionally soaked in water overnight, peeled in the morning and eaten first thing, before breakfast — a habit many families pass down from one generation to the next. Mamra is also valued in Unani and Ayurvedic food traditions, and soaked almonds are a familiar part of the morning routine in many South Asian homes.

Traditional uses are shared for cultural and historical interest. Mamra almonds are a food and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

To soak them, cover a small handful with water, leave overnight, then slip the skins off with your fingers in the morning. For more about the variety and its history, read our guide What Are Mamra Almonds?

Which Should You Buy?

  • Choose Mamra if you want almonds to eat on their own, to soak in the morning, to serve guests, to give as a gift, or for festive sweets where the almond flavour should stand out.
  • Choose California if you bake a lot, make almond milk or butter, need almonds in volume, or want the best value for everyday snacking.
  • Choose both if you cook a lot: many households keep California almonds for baking and a smaller bag of Mamra for eating.

You'll find both in our dried nuts collection.
